How to look at before and after photos
Before and after photos are most useful when you compare like with like. Look for photos taken from the same angle, with similar lighting and with the hair dry and unstyled. Wet hair, strong overhead light and different camera angles can make the same scalp look very different.
A hair transplant also takes time. The transplanted hairs shed in the first weeks and regrow over the following months; most of the result is visible at around 12 months, and the crown can keep improving until 18 months. Our hair transplant recovery timeline explains each stage.
What determines your result
- The extent of hair loss. The larger the area, the more grafts are needed. Our guide to the Norwood scale explains the stages.
- Your donor area. The density of the back and sides of your head decides how many grafts can be taken safely.
- Your hair type. Thick, wavy or curly hair and a low contrast between hair and skin colour give more visual density per graft.
- Planning and technique. The hairline design and the angle and direction of each graft matter most. See FUE vs DHI.
- Long-term care. Transplanted hair usually keeps growing, but native hair can keep thinning. Read is a hair transplant permanent?
